Last week Sony started to send the email invitation to try the Playstation 4 Firmware 4.50 Beta Update, an upcoming major update noticeably enables external HDD to be supported by PS4. Unfortunately, Calmgamers.com didn’t receive the invitational email, but we manage to do some quick interview with the user that already invited. The user, Ryan Wijaya, has installed and tried the beta update a few days ago and he gave his quick impression of it.
He experimented with and stated that the external HDD support feature is considerably okay. Games installed on the internal hard drive now can be moved to external and vice versa without a problem. Whatever the initial format is, the HDD that use in pair with PS4 will be specially formatted as external PS4 storage (some kind of encrypted exFAT format) and can’t be read anymore if you plug into a PC or other devices. He has tried installed some games in external, play for some hours and so far they run just fine.
When you download a digital game, in Setting > Storage you can also set the default storage so the file will be downloaded directly to your external.
The other exciting feature is the PS4 Pro’s Boost Mode where Ryan used a PS4 Pro to try this mode. Other than improving framerate it also helps prevent fps drop in certain areas that regular PS4 cannot handle. For example, he experiences improved framerate in Bloodborne’s Research Hall and The Witcher 3 Swamp Area. However, the result is varied for each game.
As for The other updates, he also tried it but not detailed yet:
- Customs post in What’s New tab can only post the screenshot
- For the custom theme – you may only use the screenshot, not other images
The Notification is now combined into one list
- Quick Menu has more options for Sound/Devices
- Options to upload/download saved data directly from game icon now added
