The full specs for Xbox Scorpio already announced on April 6, 2017, on Digital Foundry. This new console is the answer from Microsoft to face the current-gen console king, Sony with the latest console PS4 Pro. This recent announcement has made more intense console war between Sony and Microsoft, which had started since the release of Xbox. This new rivalry also marks the gaming consoles entry to 4K gaming level, something that only achieved with a PC powerhouse before. Nowadays gamers are still skeptical with 4K gaming (with PS4 Pro), but we believe in near future, 4K will be a standard for gaming.

There are also new console, the Nintendo Switch, that released in March but we guess they aren’t competing directly with Xbox or PS4 Pro. Instead, they targeted on more casual, gamers who demand more portable that doesn’t worry too much about 4K gaming.

As many gamers will always debate which is better, we will give our analyses and try to make the comparison between some important factors: Specs, Pricing, and Games available.

1. Specs

According to Eurogamer, below is the technical specs for Xbox Scorpio and PS4 Pro:

Xbox Scorpio

Specs Project Scorpio PS4 Pro
CPU Eight custom x86 cores clocked at 2.3GHz Eight Jaguar cores clocked at 2.1GHz
GPU 40 customized compute units at 1172MHz 36 improved GCN compute units at 911MHz
Memory 12GB GDDR5 8GB GDDR5
Memory Bandwidth 326GB/s 218GB/s
Hard Drive 1TB 2.5-inch 1TB 2.5-inch
Optical Drive 4K UHD Blu-ray Blu-ray

Look at the specs; the Xbox Scorpio is superior to PS4 Pro in almost every aspect except the hard drive. The Scorpio’s GPU will have a power of six teraflops while PS4 Pro “only” has 4.2 teraflops (see more details about teraflops meaning here). In short, the higher teraflops mean better and faster performance in gaming.

Theoretically, because of that difference, Scorpio will be able to run games at native 4K resolution while PS4 Pro runs mostly in upscaling checkerboard 4K (not native). In general, the newer Scorpio will perform superbly in the upcoming 4K game.

Also, Xbox Scorpio (along with Xbox One S) has something that Pro doesn’t offer: 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive. So, this round winner is… Xbox Scorpio

2. Pricing and Availability

According to GamesRadar, Digital Foundry estimated of a £400/$499 price for Scorpio. This calculation is based on the PS4 Pro’s £349/$399 starting price, then considering the better specs and an “excellent cooling solution” for Scorpio. This is the best and sensible strategy if they actually put Scorpio’s price one bar higher than PS4 Pro. Because, if Microsoft decides to match its price of PS4 Pro at launch (which is going to be pretty exciting), then we assume Sony will also lower the price thus makes the PS4 Pro more attractive for gamers and increases their lead further.

Project Scorpio’s launch schedule is in winter 2017, targeting the holiday season. More Scorpio reveals at E3 2017, with extensive new details and hopefully, give some clarity on its release date and launch games. With PS4 Pro comes a year earlier, surely Microsoft needs a lot of catch-ups there.

So we can’t give further judgment yet as there is no official announcement for price and launch date. So, this round winner is… A Draw

3. Games and Exclusives

This is the most important factors among these three. Just look at the games that already released on 2017 for PS4: Nioh, Gravity Rush 2, Nier: Automata, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Persona 5. What a list of exclusives there! Something that Xbox owners could only dream of (except, they also own a PS4…). If that’s not enough yet look also at the upcoming releases: Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, GT Sport, Spider-Man, The Last of Us 2, God of War, Death Stranding, and much more.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

GT Sport

Death Stranding

God of War

 Days Gone

Some of PS4 upcoming games

For Xbox? Well, Gears of War 4, Crackdown 3, and the cancellation of Scalebound are never enough and just make them losing more. The game already releases this year such as Halo Wars 2 also already far inferior compared to big-hit PS4 titles. Besides that, in term of the future title, Sony also has ‘secured’ big developers such as Naughty Dog and Guerilla Games to create them AAA exclusive titles in the coming years.

And, this round the clear winner is… PS4 Pro

The Verdict

PS4 Pro win by the slightest margin but essential one, the games and exclusives. Graphics sure are important, but it’s not that essential. Noted also for some people, they could hardly see the difference between native 4K and the checkerboard 4K upscaling. Interesting to see also how is Microsoft respond to Sony in term of exclusives as they will have a powerful gaming machine in Scorpio but no exclusives confirmed. One thing that (may) help Scorpio is the backward compatibility with Xbox One games, with around 300 titles on them.

So what do you think of current gen console war? Could Xbox Scorpio at least grab some market share from PS4? Feel free to comment below!

  1. I changed to Xbox from PlayStation because of halo at the time, Sony didn’t have an answer to that then. So I guess it was down to game titles that made me switch. My daughter has a PS4 so I can see that Sony have got their act together now and if funds would stretch I would have a PS4 aswell. In my mind the experience of online play is just nudged by Xbox as it’s better setup and the customer experience is a better . Plus my gaming community is more Xbox oriented at the moment. I guess really it’s a wait and see, if Xbox come back with some titles that are worth having then I will stay, if not, I may switch. But I can only jump once! Xbox or Sony , I’m a gaming dad so funds aren’t limitless. Time will tell who wins!

    • Hi Mark, thanks anyway for visiting my blog.

Yeah, I put both consoles on high regard but the Xbox exclusives just can’t cope with PS’ right now. Maybe with project Scorpio they finally have something worth looking for? Let’s see!

  2. To be honest, PS4 Pro might not have great gaming performance than Scorpio, but the way Microsoft are pushing Scorpio, it seems like PS4 Pro will win over it by slightest margin. Because PS4 Pro has and is going to have great upcoming exclusives than Xbox Scorpio. Even if Xbox Scorpio is powerful, if it does not have great exclusives than PS4 Pro, then I think PS4 Pro might win. I love both Xbox and PlayStation, but PlayStation remains my favorite console than Xbox. Thanks for the blog.
